While dental emergencies are rare, they can happen. Here are some common dental emergencies and what you can do to take care of them before you get to us
Toothache
The cause can be due to caries (big cavities), cracked or broken tooth, a lost restoration (a filling or a crown), infection, and more. If you see swelling, use cool compress, otherwise hold a warm cloth against your cheek for temporary relief. To further reduce pain, use an over the counter pain reliever. Even if the toothache gets better, call us right away for evaluation and treatment as our teeth do not heal on their own.
Permanent tooth knocked out
Time is key. Be sure to reach a dentist within 30 minutes. Only handle the knocked out tooth by holding the enamel, not the exposed root. If you can insert the tooth back into its socket do so without force and bite down on a gauze or cloth. If this is not possible try to pocket the tooth in the cheek fully immersed in saliva. Next best thing to do is to store it in the glass of milk and get to the dentist as soon as possible.
Object caught between teeth
Try to use dental floss to remove the object gently. Do not use sharp objects that could potentially damage your gums or scratch your enamel.
Broken or cracked tooth/teeth
If tooth is broken or cracked due to physical trauma, thoroughly rinse your mouth with clean, warm water to remove any debris. Also, ensure to examine if there is a punctured lip or tongue. If there is bleeding, use pressure to stop the bleeding. If the lip is swollen, cold compress to reduce the swelling. If bleeding does not stop, visit an ER doctor.
